One of the tracks made at the very beginning of House Music (as we came to know it), you’ll find it on their 12 inch EP ‘Risque Rythum’ and the odd compilation, if you can find them.

“Little” Louie & Marc Anthony ~ Ride On The Rhythm ~ Atlantic ~ 1991
With sax by Luis Vega Snr (presumably little Louie Vega’s dad, as Luis Vega is also a pseudonym of Louie Vega?), rap by Doug Lazy, part-written by India, “Little” Louie Vega with D. Whitaker and production by Little Louie and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez, this had a lot going for it. Marc Anthony, the lead singer on the track would later marry Jennifer Lopez in 2004. It made # 36 in the UK, # 1 US Dance chart.

Rhythm On The Loose ~ Break Of Dawn ~ The One After D Records ~ 1991
Otherwise someone called Geoff Hibbert, it took him four years to finally get into the UK charts with this track, attaining the # 36 position at its peak. What was it about dawn, that was such a magnet for titles of tracks back at the height of House? Bobby Womack ~ I Can Understand It ~ United Artists ~ 1972
“I Can Understand It” written produced and arranged by Bobby Womack, originally recorded for his US top ten album, Understanding, which was released in late 1972. The album and also featured Harrie Hippie. Funk group New Birth recorded a faster version in 1973 and had a Top 10 US R&B hit with their version.

Taken from her “Get Loose” album, Written by Kashif. 17 on the Hot100, 1 on the US R&B and Dance charts 7 over here

From the man who brought us ‘Soul Makossa’ another slice of afro infused dance music that tore up dancefloors, especially in the UK where it was lapped up by Jazz-Funk fans and club DJs in general and France his ‘adopted’ country. This has to be one of my favourite club tracks of all-time.

Africanism ~ Block Party (Q re-edit/remix) ~ Yellow Productions ~ 2000
Another slice of French dance music with jazzy undertones, this time put together by DJ Gregory, who’d started in the early 90s and established himself as a big part of the Paris House scene. Described as ‘tribal’ by one fellow DJ, I just love it for the groove, even if the same sax riff can get to be a tad tedious.

Danny Howells & Dick Trevor ft. Erire ~ Dusk Til Dawn ~ CR2 Records ~ 2004
Also known as ‘Science Department’ and this was a number 37 in the UK. I last played it about six months ago, but just had to hear it again, as the pounding beat and scratch guitar just make me wanna move. Love it!

OK if you’re an old-time DJ like me, you will remember when this first hit and how with this and debut single ‘Young Guns’ Wham was a relatively hip band. Listen to the lyrics and they’re certainly rebellious and so totally un-Wham like. Little did we realise at the time what a mega-star George Michael would turn out to be, or how popular Wham would become. #8 UK Feb 1983

Rob N Raz ft. Leila K ~ Got To Get ~ Telegram Records Stockholm/Arista ~ 1989
They, Rasmus Lindwall & Robert Watz, were an English production team, she, Leila El Kalifi, was a Swedish singer/rap artist of Moroccan decent, discovered by them at a music show. This goodtime record, so typical of much that was released at the time made # 8 in the UK.

King Bee ~ Back By Dope Demand ~ Torso Dance ~ Netherlands ~ 1990
His biggest hit, it’s another of those slightly tongue-in-cheek, goodtime tracks that had dancefloors humming back then. The fellas behind King Bee was Dutch Hip-Hop DJ ‘Allstar Fresh’ and BC Boy. #61 UK

the second single to be released from Parliament’s 1976 album mothership Connection, and was the highest-charting single from the album, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart and number fifteen on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. It also became Parliament’s first certified million-selling single, going Gold in 1976.

Formed by Ray Parker Jr in 1977, this was their debut single and peaked at 8 on the Hot 100 and 11 over here.

Otherwise known as Lady M, she was in the vocal group ‘Shades Of Love from ’79 to ’83 before branching out on her own. This track was taken from and was the opening track of her debut solo album, ‘Do Me Baby’. What an invitation! #41 UK, her biggest hit over here, #24 R&B US..

The Strangers ~ Step Out Of My Dream ~ Salsoul ~ 1983
Edward Moore, Howard King and Hubert Eaves III made up the band ‘The Strangers’. They released just the one album on Salsoul and two singles, of which this was one. How Hubert Eaves III came to be in this band is a bit of a mystery to me, as he was already in the highly successful D Train.

James Taylor Quartet ~ Love Will Keep Us Together ~ Acid Jazz ~ 1995
Yes, I know this is a leap from the previous two tracks, but it does have a very soulful edge to it and I’ve been wanting to play it for a fair while. The track features Alison Limerick on vocals and was the first track on the band’s ninth album ‘In The Hands Of The Inevitable’.

Yvonne Gage – Doin’ It In A Haunted House Chycago International Music (C.I.M.) US 1984. Famously sampling/re-working parts from Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, it could also be found on her LP ‘Virginity’ and did reasonably well for her on the dancefloors, even though ‘Thriller’ had been and gone and was possibly over-played by time of release. # 45 UK

Living In A Box – Blow The House Down Chrysalis 1989.
The English trio had Dan Hartman co-produce this track for them, taken from their second album ‘Gatecrashing’, the title track to which we played a few weeks back. # 10 UK MIX

Professor Funk & the House Brothers – Work Your Body Rap Underground US 1986.
Joe Smooth and Rocky Jones (owner of DJ International Records), were co-producers on this, a sort of rap version of the House giant ‘Jack Your Body’ by Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley… or is it?. I’m guessing it was made around the same time as the Hurley classic and at one time even vied for supremacy.
