Al Hudson & Soul Partners ~ You Can Do It ~ MCA ~ 1978

I’m starting off today with a track that was an absolute guaranteed floorfiller and was on UK DJs’ playlists for a very long time, almost reaching anthem status. A few weeks back Paul played Wish – Mr. DJ, mentioning it was a ‘clone’ of Kool & the Gang’s ‘Ladies Night’, well, for all us real old timers, Ladies Night was a part-clone of this Al Hudson track.

Jackie McLean ~ Dr. Jackyll & Mr. Funk ~ RCA ~ 1979

Taken from the 1979 LP Monuments. I’ve been meaning to give this track a spin forever and a day, but never got around to it…until now. A seasoned Jazz musician, in 1979 the then 48 year old, succumbed to the (at the time) all-conquering jazz-funk dance scene and released this blinder of a track, recorded at RCA studios, New York. Number 53 here in the UK.

Poopee & the N.Y. Squirrels ~ Bust That Nut (Downtown Mix) ~ CT Records ~ 1981

And now, for one of the most obscure tracks ever to be featured on the show, courtesy of Patrick Adams of New York’s notorious P&P records out of Harlem and Greg Carmichael, who wrote the song. An unofficial release, the mix was performed by John Morales of M&M fame.
