Temptations ~ Standing On The Top ~ Motown ~ 1982

Featuring guest Rick James who wrote, produced and arranged the track, the Temptations with Standing On The Top from the Reunion album. Following a split, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin agreed to rejoin the group and Rick James (who was Melvin Franklin’s nephew) put together this track with them. The Temptations had previously sang backing vocals on his 1981 hit “Super Freak”. The single went to number 6 on the USR&B, 66 on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached 53 here in the UK.

Jeffrey Osbourne ~ Stay With Me Tonight ~ A&M ~ 1983

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the youngest of 12 children. His father, Clarence “Legs” Osborne, was a trumpeter who played with Lionel Hampton, Count Basie and Duke Elington. Osborne started his music career in 1970 with a band called Love Men Ltd., who would later become known as L.T.D. At first, he was a drummer, but then became the lead vocalist. He left L.T.D. in late 1980 to go solo. His solo success includes five gold and platinum albums. Stay With Me Tonight made 30 on the Hot 100, 4 US R&B, and 18 in the UK

Kool & The Gang ~ Straight Ahead ~ De-Lite ~ 1984

For a while in the UK, Kool & The Gang could do no wrong on UK dance-floors although in the US they were considered to have sold out by some people. Maybe that’s why Straight Ahead only made 103 on the Hot 100 yet reached 15 on the UK Top 40. It’s taken from their “In The Heart” album, and was written by band members Ronald Bell, James Taylor & Kool & The Gang.
