Marilynn McCoo & Billy Davis Jnr, Sylvester, and Ja-Kki, selected by Steve

Marilynn McCoo & Billy Davis Jnr. ~ Shine On Silver Moon ~ Columbia US ~ 1978

Produced by legendary Stax guitarist Steve Cropper, here’s a track that did well in the USA but didn’t fare half as well over here in the UK. Both were members of 5th Dimension (Billy being the originator of the band) and left to be a duo in 1975, before pursuing solo careers in the early ‘80s. So far as I know, they are still happily married.

Sylvester ~ I Need You ~ Fantasy ~ 1980

A year or so earlier, Sylvester had smashed into the disco charts with ‘Mighty Real’ and ‘Dance’, but although still making very danceable tracks such as this, he was less revered. What I love about tracks such as this is the Gospel – like sound to his voice.

Ja-Kki ~ Sun, Sun, Sun ~ Pyramid Records ~ 1976

Remixed by Walter Gibbons and the brainchild of Johnny Melfi who had a fair few disco connections including being the writer and co-producer of Cameo’s ‘Find My Way’. I really don’t know what he was trying to achieve in this track, as to my mind it seems such an uncoordinated mish mash of themes and ideas, but it does have its fans.
