Donald Byrd, Riding High, and Gary Bartz picked by Steve

Donald Byrd ~ Places And Spaces ~ Blue Note ~ 1975

The title track from his mighty LP that also contained ‘Wind Parade’, ‘Change’ and ‘Dominoes’, the whole album just talked to me BITD. The Chill out music for my generation, this was played and enjoyed by me many times whilst hanging out at the beach.

Faze – O ~ Riding High ~ She Records Us ~ 1977

Produced by one of the Ohio Players, Clarence Satchell, I really don’t know anything about this Chicago band or the track, as I don’t think it’s one I came across back in the ‘70s. They recorded three albums from ’77 to ’79 and this was their very first single release and only R&B hit, reaching #9 in early 1978.

Gary Bartz ~ Shake Your Body ~ Capitol ~ 1978

From his album, ‘Love Affair’ this was the first Gary Bartz track I ever played as a DJ to a good reaction, not that I played many more by him, but this used to go down surprisingly well. He had worked with some real Jazz legends as a younger man, such as Art Blakey and Miles Davis, before turning to the fusion of R&B and Jazz that he became known for by UK’s club DJs.
