Four fliers from Paul

25 09 2011

My first mix for Show 100 were these four, floor-filling, fliers…

The Real Thing ~ Can You Feel The Force on Pye Records uk no. 5 in 1979
This was a big crossover disco pop hit – at the time I was working as the singles-buyer at the Virgin store in Southampton and I remember freaking the branch manager out by ordering 200 copies of the 12” – we had to reorder before the week was out!

Harry Thumann ~ Underwater UK No 41 in 1981 on Decca
Harry Thumann was a German electronic composer, who designed and built ground breaking synthesizers and studio equipment from the early 60’s onwards. Sadly, he died in 2001 in relative obscurity, but will forever remain an interesting footnote in the annals of electronic music production history for Underwater and the Album it was taken from, his extraordinary technical achievements in synthesizer design and his inspirational work on early electronic sequencers. Underwater was taken from his first album American Express and was originally released in 1979 – it charted here in 1981 reaching No. 41.

The Isley Brothers ~ It’s A Disco Night (Rock Don’t Stop) uk no. 14 in 1979
“It’s a Disco Night (Rock Don’t Stop)” only charted briefly on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number 90, but reached number 14 on the UK Singles chart.

Curtis Mayfield ~ Move On Up on Buddah Records uk no. 12 in 1971
This is a 3 minute masterpiece – Curtis Lee Mayfield (June 3, 1942 – December 26, 1999)
“Move on Up” is from his 1970 debut album Curtis In 1971, the song spent ten weeks in the UK Chart reaching No. 12

Flakes, Teddy Pendergrass, and the Isley Brothers, played by Paul

16 07 2011

Flakes ~ Sugar Frosted Lover ~ Magic Disc Record US / Calibre ~ UK ~ 1980
From the album 1980 Flakes 1, we played this for Silvio in Argentina. Last time we played this Steve mentioned the video on You Tube and suggested we might contribute to some more views. Well all the videos from that account have now been removed following complaints about copy-write infringement, something we always think is really sad. The track is available from iTunes etc – so if you like it – buy it!
Here’s the track, put up on the JFSR video page, let’s improve on the 278 hits it has as I type!

Teddy Pendergrass ~ The More I Get ~ PIR ~ 1977

A great track, taken from his debut album written by McFadden, Whitehead, Victor Carstarphen.

Here’s Teddy on Soul Train

Isley Brothers ~ Dancin’ Around The World
Ahh … er …
OK, I know nothing at all about this track, I don’t even know what year it was recorded. I have it on a hits album, it was probably a “includes 3 new songs” kind-of track to encourage fans who already had a lot of the songs to buy the album. There isn’t even a video that I can find on-line.

So if you’d like to hear it, you’ll need to CLICK HERE to go to our Podomatic podcast which you can stream live or download for later.

The Isley Brothers ~ Summer Breeze, selected by the Gold Boys!

6 06 2010

Tonight’s the night – it’s been one hell of a long time coming but it’s finally here!

It’s FREE, but we’d like you to stick something in the bucket for BREAKTHROUGH BREAST CANCER.

Please come along and say hello – even if you can’t dance the whole night away because of other commitments. The evening starts at 7:30 and we’ll be wrappin’ things up about 11pm, when you’ll probably get to hear this classic!

The track is a cover of a song by Seals & Croft in a harder rock/soulful style and released by The Isley Brothers as a single in 1974. lifted from their classic 1973 album, 3 + 3, it reached number sixty on the American pop singles chart, number ten on the R&B singles chart, and number sixteen over here.
