This was a big crossover disco pop hit – at the time I was working as the singles-buyer at the Virgin store in Southampton and I remember freaking the branch manager out by ordering 200 copies of the 12” – we had to reorder before the week was out!
Harry Thumann ~ Underwater UK No 41 in 1981 on Decca
Harry Thumann was a German electronic composer, who designed and built ground breaking synthesizers and studio equipment from the early 60’s onwards. Sadly, he died in 2001 in relative obscurity, but will forever remain an interesting footnote in the annals of electronic music production history for Underwater and the Album it was taken from, his extraordinary technical achievements in synthesizer design and his inspirational work on early electronic sequencers. Underwater was taken from his first album American Express and was originally released in 1979 – it charted here in 1981 reaching No. 41.
