Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock, Positive Force, and Kariya – the final 3 as picked by Paul

30 08 2011

Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock ~ It Takes Two ~ 1988

Last week I played Get On The dancefloor – here’s their first hit from ealier in the same year 1988. It made 36 on the Hot 100, 3 on the US Dance and 17 over here. Based on a sample from Lyn Collins 1972 hit Think and the intro is spoken over a sample of “Space Dust” by The Galactic Force Band (1978).

Positive Force ~ We Got The Funk ~ Sugar Hill Records ~ 1979

Written by band leaders Albert Williams and Brenda Reynolds with Nate Edmonds – a UK number 18 at the end of 1979

Kariya ~ Let Me Love You For Tonight ~ Sleeping Bag ~ 1988

released on Sleeping Bag Records, written by Jay Ferrer. This actually came out on the UK in 1989 and was a huge record for me for over a year. It charted here in the Summer and peaked at 44 in July, but it hung around the charts for months and peaked again in October at 57. It’s effect was almost hypnotic, as soon as clubbers heard the opening bars they were drawn to the floor!

So that’s it for this weeks show, but you can still stream the whole thing or even download it for later. CLICK HERE for the Podomatic Podcast.

La Flavour, Santa Esmeralda, and Vicki Sue Robinson, mixed by Steve

30 08 2011

La Flavour ~ Mandolay ~ Sweet City US ~ 1979

Especially for Bernie Lopez, founder and owner of discomusic.com, the premier website in the world for anything and everything disco, comes this big disco hit from a band that started out in 1967 and still performs with some of the original members, to this day. #7 BB Hot 100.

Santa Esmeralda ~ Another Cha Cha ~ Casablanca US ~ 1979

I know many of you may be saying, who? To put the record straight, this band actually held the record for the most album sales (of a dance album) with 15 million sold worldwide of their second LP ‘Santa Esmeralda featuring Leroy Gomez’. By the time this, title track from their fourth album was released, Gomez had left the band and they were much less in favour, but I just love the energy of it.

Vicki Sue Robinson ~ Turn The Beat Around ~ RCA ~ 1976

I hope this gives you an idea of how I like to mix tracks. For me, percussion had always been an important part of great dance records, so when I first heard this track with the lines “Turn the beat around, Love to hear percussion, Turn it upside down” and all the percussion breaks it contained, how could I not fall in love with it? What a classic and yet it never made the UK charts! #1 Disco US.

Incognito, Cesaria Evora, and Vincent Montana Jnr. & The Philly Sound Orchestra, spun by Steve

27 08 2011

Incognito ~ Nights Over Egypt ~ Talkin’ Loud ~ 1999

From a band that seems to just keep getting better and better comes this remake of the Jones Girls classic, but in what was then the happening style of the time. If only I’d known about this type of classy House/Garage music at the time, I’d have a lot more of it in my collection.

Cesaria Evora ~ Sangue De Beirona

I’m playng this for regular listener Gazza who lives in Brazil and recently had a serious illness from which he is still not fully recovered. Cesaria Evora is from the Cape Verde Islands, where she is a national icon, having captured audiences around the world and proudly helped put her country on the map.

Vincent Montana Jnr. & The Philly Sound Orchestra ~ That’s What Love Does ~ PSW ~ 2005

Talking of class, here is a track that has it in abundance, from the vocals of William ‘Smoke’ Howard to the fantastic production, arrangement and vibes playing of Philadelphia main man, Vince Montana Jnr.

The Velvellettes, and Hall & Oates with David Ruffin & Eddie Kendrick, selected by Paul

27 08 2011

Velvellettes ~ Needle In A Haystack ~ VIP (Motown) ~ 1964

The Velvelettes got their first hit with Needle In A Haystack in the spring of 1964 thanks to a young Norman Whitfield who co-wrote the track with William Stevenson and produced on Motown’s VIP Records imprint. “Needle In A Haystack” peaked at number 45 on the Hot 100 in mid 1964.

Hall & Oates ~ Apollo Medley ~ RCA ~ 1985

Taken from their Live at the Apollo according to Wiki it was recorded on Sept. 20, 1985, and released 10 days later! Recorded at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York. Featuring special guests David Ruffin & Eddie Kendrick . The Apollo Medley: Get Ready/Ain’t Too Proud To Beg/The Way You Do the Things You Do/My Girl”

Love Unlimited, Stephanie Mills, and Melba Moore, as mixed by Steve

26 08 2011

Love Unlimited ~ High Steppin’, Hip Dressin’ Fella (You Got It Together) ~ Unlimited Gold ~ 1979

Sisters Goldean and Linda James along with Diane Taylor were Love Unlimited. They’d formed in 1969 and enjoyed success with Barry White as backing vocalists as well as when they branched out on their own, their best knownt hit being the smash ‘Walking In The Rain With The One I Love’. They disbanded in 1980.

Stephanie Mills ~ What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin’ ~ 20th Century ~ 1979

Here we have the very distinctive voice of a lady who was on the soul/dance scene for quite some years, always nibbling away at the US R&B charts where she enjoyed five number ones. This was her first R&B hit reaching #8. Another track very well received in the JFSR chatroom on Thursday.

Melba Moore ~ Standing Right Here ~ Buddah ~ 1977

Written and produced by Philly trio, Gene McFadden, John Whitehead and Victor Carstarphen, this little gem sees Melba Moore in fine form on a track that sounds like anything but a Philly production. She was born Beatrice Melba Smith in New York, for my money had one of the sweetest, purest voices on the scene and had already had a successful Broadway career, TV show and chart success, by the time this was released.
